Combined heat and power quality assurance (CHPQA) guidance notes

Certification for good quality combined heat and power (CHP).

Update: 2 September 2025

A new Combined Heat and Power Quality Assurance (CHPQA) self-assessment portal is now available.

You need to log on to the new portal to register with the CHPQA scheme and use it to submit your self-assessment for certification for your next submission - see the section Registering with CHPQA.

We are updating these pages and any linked guidance.

The legacy CHPQA digital service is now redundant, and you no longer need to complete the following forms:

  • F1 - to register with the CHPQADz
  • F2 or F2(s) - to provide a description of CHP schemes to be self-assessed where already commissioned
  • F3 or F3(s) - self-assessment for proposed or predicted, new or upgraded CHP𳾱
  • F4 or F4(s) - self-assessment for actual performance data for existing schemes for the previous calendar year

If you have any questions, please contact the CHPQAʰDz.

Simple guides to CHPQA

This series of short, simplified guides is aimed at those new to the programme, or who need a quick refresher on key topics.

CHPQA guidance notes

The guidance notes help and guide applicants in completing the required forms and in carrying out self-assessment of their combined heat and power (CHP) schemes. They may be updated from time to time and the latest version of each notes and form will be available on the website.

ճCHPQA Guidance Notes are structured as follows:

  • GN0 to GN9: Introduction
  • GN10 to GN16: Scheme Details and Thresholds
  • GN17 to GN29: CHPQAԲ
  • GN30 to GN39: Treatment of Special Cases
  • GN40 to GN49: Uses for CHPQA
  • GN50: Quantifying And Justifying Useful Heat Outputs
  • GN60: Temporary COVID-19 Easement

Read the guidance notes in conjunction with the CHPQAٲԻ岹, which sets out definitions, criteria and methodologies for the operation of CHPQA. The guidance notes provide detailed information on how the Standard will be interpreted by government departments and agencies as well as guidance on compliance with the Standard. They include a number of worked examples.
