5 February 2025

The invitation letter sent to councils in ​East Sussex and Brighton and Hove set out their milestones for reorganisation.

They were invited to submit final proposals for unitary local government by 26 September 2025.

19 November 2025

A was made to Parliament. This set out that a statutory consultation on proposals for local government reorganisation in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove was published.

For the purposes of the consultation, the proposals in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove, and West Sussex have been grouped together.

The Minister of State for Local Government and Homelessness also wrote to the leaders of councils in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove to thank them for their proposals and inform them of the consultation.

Wealden District Council did not submit a proposal for unitary local government and so the letter is not addressed to their leader.

25 March 2026

A was made to Parliament, setting out that the Secretary of State has not yet made a decision about the proposals received from East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. 

The Secretary of State wrote to East Sussex and Brighton and Hove council leaders to explain the rationale for this, noting that he is considering modifications to the proposals that may address his concerns.

Accompanying this announcement, an update letter was sent to East Sussex and Brighton and Hove council leaders

27 March 2026

MHCLG officials wrote to East Sussex, Brighton and Hove council chief executives about the next steps for a consultation on potential modifications to the proposal submitted by East Sussex, Brighton and Hove councils.

12 May 2026

​Alison McGovern MP, Minister for Local Government and Homelessness, wrote to the East Sussex and Brighton and Hove council leaders to provide information on a further consultation being launched. This consultation seeks views on the options for potential modification to the proposal.​
