The invitation letter sent to councils in 鈥婨ast Sussex and Brighton and Hove set out their milestones for reorganisation.

They were invited to submit final proposals for unitary local government by 26 September 2025.

19 November 2025

A was made to Parliament. This set out that a statutory consultation on proposals for local government reorganisation in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove was published.

For the purposes of the consultation,鈥痶he proposals in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove, and West Sussex have been grouped together.

The Minister of State for Local Government and Homelessness also wrote to the leaders of councils in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove to thank them for their proposals and inform them of the consultation.

25 March 2026

A was made to Parliament,聽setting聽out that the Secretary of State has not yet made a decision about聽the proposals聽received from聽East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.聽

The Secretary of State wrote to East Sussex and Brighton and Hove council leaders to explain聽the rationale for this,聽noting聽that he is considering聽modifications to the proposals that may address聽his聽concerns.

Accompanying this announcement, an update letter was sent to East Sussex and Brighton and Hove council leaders

MHCLG officials wrote to East Sussex, Brighton and Hove council chief executives about the next steps for a consultation on potential modifications to the proposal submitted by East Sussex, Brighton and Hove councils.
