Government approves UK鈥檚 largest power-producing solar farm
800 MW Springwell Solar farm given approval 鈥� the largest solar project in the UK terms of power generation.

Families and businesses will benefit from more solar power, one of the cheapest forms of power available, as the government today (Wednesday 8 April) approves a major new solar power project.
The听Springwell Solar Farm听is set to be the听largest power-producing solar farm in the UK听鈥� according to the developer听it听could power over 180,000 homes a year,听the equivalent of half the homes in Lincolnshire.听听
The decision marks the听25th听nationally听significant clean energy project approved by the government since July 2024 鈥� enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than听12.5听million homes.听
Global instability 鈥� from Ukraine to the war in Iran 鈥� has exposed the cost of relying on fossil fuel markets听Britain does听not control. Solar is听one of听the cheapest forms听of power available for the country, and central to the government鈥檚 clean power mission to bring stability and lower bills, in an uncertain world.听听听
Today鈥檚 approval builds on decisive action the government has taken to learn the lessons from the conflict in the Middle East.听This includes听bringing plug-in solar to the UK,听fitting solar on new homes as听standard听and fast-tracking the next听renewables auction听to July this year.听听

It is crucial we learn the lessons of the conflict in the Middle East 鈥� solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available and is how we get off the rollercoaster of international fossil fuel markets and secure our own energy independence.
