Chargée d’Affaires to the Holy See

Dr Anabel Inge

Biography

Dr Anabel Inge joined the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in 2018 as Deputy Head of Scholarships in London, overseeing the Chevening and Marshall programmes. After a period of Italian language training, she moved to Rome in August 2021 to take up her position as Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy to the Holy See.

Before coming to the Foreign Office, Anabel held various roles in academia, education and Whitehall. Following a BA in Philosophy and a Masters in the Study of Religions, she gained a PhD in the Anthropology of Religion at King’s College London. She then published ‘The Making of a Salafi Muslim Woman: Paths to Conversion’ (Oxford University Press, 2017), based on 2-and-a-half years of pioneering ethnographic research in Salafi communities.

Her study has broad implications for understanding the role of faith in the modern world and ‘non-violent extremism’. It has attracted considerable public interest, resulting in numerous publications, talks and interviews. Anabel is a passionate advocate of religious literacy in policy-making.

Anabel has taught courses on Islam and on the Anthropology of Religion at SOAS (University of London) and at King’s College London. She also taught English for business to senior executives in Milan for a year and worked as a policy advisor on local taxation for 2 years at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government in London.
