Archie Young CMG
Biography
Ambassador Archie Young was appointed Ambassador to the UN General Assembly in January 2024.
He was previously the Interim Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, New York from October 2025 to July 2026.
He previously served as the UK’s Lead Climate Negotiator from 2016 to 2022, including leading the negotiations for the UK’s Presidency of COP26 which saw all 196 countries agree the Glasgow Climate Pact and finalise the Paris Rulebook. During this period he was also Director for International Climate and Energy in BEIS and then Director for Negotiations and Ambition in Cabinet Office.
Prior to this, Archie held several Senior Civil Service roles in London, including Deputy Director Americas in FCDO, Head of the Delivery Unit in the Department of Energy & Climate Change, and Deputy Director for Business, Environment & Olympics in the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit.
During a recent sabbatical, he was an M-RCBG Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and worked with climate philanthropy and multilateral think tanks. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael & St George (CMG) in 2022 for services to tackling global climate change.

The Ambassador to the General Assembly represents the UK across the General Assembly and its committees, advancing UK priorities on issues such as human rights, new technologies, and UN budgets. They also coordinate the UK’s engagement in major UN processes and high-level events.
