William (Bill) Longhurst

Biography

William Longhurst (known as Bill) arrived in Minsk in July 2026 to take up his appointment as Chargé d’Affaires en titre of the United Kingdom in the Republic of Belarus. Before taking up this appointment, he completed full-time Russian language training. Previously, he served as Deputy Head of Mission in Switzerland.

Bill was British Ambassador to Cambodia (2014 to 2018). He previously served with the British government in Seoul (Political and Economic/Trade Policy), Tokyo (Commercial), the UK’s Mission to the United Nations in New York (UN Budget and Management Reform) and as Deputy Head of Mission and Consul-General in Belgrade.

Before joining the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Bill studied Japanese and Business Studies at the University of Sheffield, and had a short spell working at a major Japanese Trust bank in Tokyo.

In his London career, he has worked on G7 policy issues, has been seconded to the then Department of Trade and Industry, promoting exports to the Japanese market and worked as Deputy Head of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s ASEAN Department.

Chargé d’Affaires en titre to Belarus

The Chargé d’Affaires represents His Majesty The King and the UK government in the country to which they are appointed. They are responsible for the direction and work of the embassy and its consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.
