Joanna Markbreiter

Biography
Joanna Markbreiter was appointed Deputy British Ambassador and Development Counsellor to Liberia in August 2024.
She arrived in Liberia from Nigeria, where she served as Protracted Crisis Advisor at the British High Commission in Abuja.
Before working for FCDO, Joanna worked in various government roles across DfID, the Ministry of Justice, DEFRA and the Department for Business and Trade.
Joanna began her career in the NGO sector in Geneva, Switzerland as a global health policy and advocacy specialist.
Beyond diplomacy, Joanna is passionate about bringing people together through music and has performed across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and America. She is a patron of the Amemuso choir in Nigeria and holds the position of Principal Guest Artist at the Liberia National Academy of Music.
Deputy Head of Mission, Liberia
The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas embassy or high commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
