Lucy Ferguson

Biography

Lucy Ferguson serves as the Acting Deputy Head of Mission at British Embassy Washington since May of 2026. Prior to her appointment as Acting Deputy Head of Mission, Lucy served as the Minister Counselor for Foreign, Security, and Development at British Embassy Washington. Between September 2025 and February 2026, she also served as Acting Deputy Head of Mission at British Embassy Washington.

Before arriving in Washington, Lucy was the Deputy British Ambassador to the Netherlands from January 2020 to August 2023.

Between 2010 and 2019, Lucy held various positions in the Foreign Office including as the Head of the Foreign and Security Policy Unit, Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary on Europe and Asia, and Private Secretary to the Permanent Representative to the European Union; and in the Cabinet Office leading in G8 and G20 Summits and as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Europe and Global Issues.

Lucy joined the Government on the Fast Stream programme working for the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, and Intellectual Property Office (now Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). She is married with two children.

Acting Deputy Head of Mission to the USA

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and a key advisor to His Majesty’s Ambassador. The Deputy Head of Mission leads the organizational operations of the Embassy, turning the Ambassador’s strategic vision and direction into tangible deliverables. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. The Deputy Head of Mission also engages with the US Administration, Congressional figures, and leaders of business and industry.
