Details

ThisĀ cost analysisĀ aims to summariseĀ and compileĀ existing knowledge of the technologies in other sectorsĀ which could be used toĀ help address net aviation emissions.

Focus areasĀ include:Ā

  • nature-based measures for greenhouse gas removalsĀ
  • likely costs,Ā relativeĀ to other methods of decarbonising aviationĀ
  • current evidence gapsĀ

The reportĀ makesĀ some conclusionsĀ on theĀ relative cost-effectiveness ofĀ nature-based removalsĀ andĀ engineered measures (like direct air carbon capture).Ā Ā

The reportĀ notesĀ thatĀ costĀ analysisĀ of these technologies dependsĀ onĀ someĀ unpredictable factors including:Ā

  • future land pricesĀ
  • actions other sectors may takeĀ to mitigate residual emissionsĀ Ā
  • the paceĀ at whichĀ engineered removals technologies matureĀ Ā

It alsoĀ identifiesĀ how future research could improveĀ ourĀ evidence base and increase confidence inĀ greenhouse gas removalĀ (GGR)Ā policy decisions.

The report was commissioned and funded by the Department forĀ Transport, but the opinions expressed within the report are solely those of the authors.
