Diagnostic investigationÌýforÌýinvolvementÌýof infectious agentsÌý
To investigateÌýtheÌýinvolvement of infectious agents,Ìýveterinary practitionersÌýshould examineÌýfetusesÌýorÌýstillborn pigletsÌýand placentas.ÌýÌý
For pigs on premises in England and Wales, where possible,Ìýyou shouldÌýsubmitÌýfreshly expelled whole litters,ÌýideallyÌýwith individual placentas,Ìýto an APHAÌýVeterinary Investigation Centre orÌýsurveillance pathology partner.
Submit each litterÌýin a separate bagÌýorÌýcontainerÌýwith a completedÌý.ÌýÌý
Where possible,Ìýyou shouldÌýsubmitÌýlittersÌýfrom several affected sows, especiallyÌýifÌýthere areÌýhigh abortionÌýorÌýstillbirth rates.ÌýÌý

Guidance for vets collecting and submitting samples from abortions and stillbirths
FollowingÌýthis guidance enablesÌýAPHA to doÌýtheÌýappropriate diagnosticÌýtesting.ÌýÌý
If theseÌýsteps are followed,Ìýthe diagnostic tests mentionedÌýwill beÌýincluded under the subsidised charge for abortion and stillbirth investigation (test code TC0011, one charged for each litterÌýsubmitted).Ìý
You should:Ìý
- examine the whole litterÌýand complete Table 1
- examine in detail and collectÌýsamplesÌýas perÌýTableÌý2ÌýfromÌýthreeÌýpiglets per litterÌý– ideally sampleÌýoneÌýsmall,ÌýoneÌýmedium and oneÌýlarge piglet, avoidingÌývery autolysedÌýorÌýmummifiedÌýpigletsÌý(except forÌýheartÌýsamples forÌýporcine parvovirusÌý– seeÌýTableÌý2)Ìý
- place fresh tissues into small individual containersÌý(e.g. 5ml bijoux)Ìý– do not pool samplesÌýÌý
- placeÌýallÌýfixed tissuesÌýfrom one pigletÌýinto one container (1:10 with formalin)Ìý
- ensure all containers are labelled toÌýindicateÌýsample type,ÌýlitterÌýand piglet identityÌý
- complete one set of tables for each litterÌýand send with the samplesÌý
- send samplesÌýwithÌýa completedÌýÌýrequestingÌýtest code TC0011Ìý– includeÌýa thorough clinical history asÌýdetailed aboveÌý
- package samplesÌýaccording to the requirements forÌýsending pathological materialÌý
- submit samples by post to:ÌýÌý
