Wild birds: record your non-lethal actions

You must provide a listÌýof non-lethal actionsÌýyou’veÌýtakenÌýwhen you apply for a licence, renew a licence, or report your actions on a licence to:Ìý

You can use the template on thisÌýpageÌýorÌýyou can provideÌýa record of your actionsÌýin another format,Ìýas long asÌýyou include the same information.ÌýFor example, if you gather theÌýinformationÌýusing an app, you canÌýsubmitÌýthe output from the app.Ìý

YourÌýrecordÌýshould include descriptions of theÌýnon-lethal deterrent methodsÌýyou’veÌýused.ÌýExamples include:Ìý

  • shooting to scareÌý
  • falconryÌý
  • humanÌýdisturbance,Ìýsuch as clapping, shouting, driving vehiclesÌý
  • static visual deterrents such asÌýscarecrowsÌý
  • static audio deterrents such as gas gunsÌý
  • fish refugesÌý
  • proofing, such as netting andÌýwiresÌý

New licencesÌý

As part of your application for a new licence, you mustÌýsubmitÌýaÌýrecordÌýofÌýnon-lethal actionsÌýyou’veÌýtakenÌýto deterÌýwild birds.ÌýÌý

You’llÌýbe asked toÌýsubmitÌýyour recordÌýwhen you complete the licence application form.Ìý

TheÌýrecordÌýmust cover a period of at leastÌýone month.ÌýYou must provide a daily summary of actions taken.Ìý

YourÌýrecord ofÌýnon-lethal actionsÌýmust include:Ìý

  • the date of the actionÌý
  • the deterrent methods usedÌý
  • the species and number of birds present – you can estimate in 10’s, 100’s or 1000’s per species if necessaryÌý
  • how effective the deterrent wasÌý

You must also include details of any long-termÌýdeterrent methodsÌýyou’veÌýused, such as visual deterrents,Ìýmodification of loafing and roosting areas, habitat managementÌý(such as fish refuges).Ìý

Renewing your licence and reporting actionsÌý

IfÌýyou’veÌýtaken any action under your licence, or you want to renew your licence, you mustÌýsubmitÌýaÌýrecordÌýof non-lethal actionsÌýyou’veÌýtaken to deter wild birds.ÌýYou’llÌýbe asked toÌýsubmitÌýyourÌýrecordÌýwhen you complete the reporting form.Ìý

You can record this asÌýmonthly summaries, covering the whole licence period.ÌýÌý

YourÌýrecord ofÌýnon-lethal actionsÌýmustÌýinclude:Ìý

  • theÌýmonthÌýofÌýeachÌýactionÌý
  • the deterrent methods usedÌý
  • the species and number of birds presentÌý–Ìýthis should be the monthly average and peak counts for each species on your licenceÌý
  • how effective the deterrentsÌýwereÌý

You must also include details of any long-term deterrent methodsÌýyou’veÌýused, such as visual deterrents, modification of loafing and roosting areas, habitat managementÌý(such as fish refuges).Ìý

You mustÌýsubmitÌýa reporting form within 14 days of the licence expiry, even if you have not taken any action or do not want to renew your licence.
