Statement by the UK's Human Rights Ambassador, Eleanor Sanders, at Belgium's Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The UK welcomes Belgium鈥檚 efforts to strengthen its national human rights architecture, including the establishment of the Federal Institute for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights.

1.听听听听听 Strengthening the independence听and听mandate听of听the Federal Institute for the Protection and Promotion of Human听Rights and听setting out clear timelines to ensure听compliance with the Paris Principles across all levels of government.听

2.听听听听听 Establishing an effective National Prevention听Mechanism, in line with the Optional Protocol to the Convention听Against Torture, with unrestricted access to all places of deprivation of liberty.听
听
3.听听听听听 Continuing听to ensure that conditions in prisons and听in听detention听comply with听international human rights standards, including through access to appropriate healthcare and mental health support, and effective safeguards against inhuman or degrading treatment.听
