Early years foundation stage profile assessment support

Early years foundation stage (EYFS) profile assessment support for school leaders and practitioners.

Children’s early years are crucial to their future development,Ā healthĀ and life chances. TheĀ Plan for ChangeĀ set the ambitionĀ for 75% of children reachingĀ a good levelĀ of development (GLD) in theĀ EYFS profileĀ assessment by 2028.Ā Ā 

This supportĀ aims to developĀ practitioners’ and leaders’ knowledge andĀ expertise in the statutory assessment, which will build further confidenceĀ in theĀ GLD measure.

Aims of the EYFS profile assessment support

The support aims to:

  • developĀ practitioners’ and leaders’ knowledge andĀ expertise
  • address common misconceptions about the assessment requirements
  • improve the reliability of EYFSĢż±č°ł“Ǔھ±±ō±šĢż²¹²õ²õ±š²õ²õ³¾±š²Ō³ŁĢż»å²¹³Ł²¹

Strengthening assessment practice will support children’s successful transition to Year 1. This will help to ensure that professional dialogue between EYFS and Year 1 colleagues is informed byĀ accurateĀ and consistent judgements.Ā 

What the support includes

The following support is available:

  • training materials
  • EYFS profile assessment support through sessions facilitated by local authorities

Examples of training materials available:

  • short written informationĀ onĀ key areas of the EYFSĀ profileĀ assessment, includingĀ the role of the headteacher and senior leaders,Ā andĀ inclusive assessment
  • bite-sizeĀ online videosĀ of 5 minutes or less, covering topics like how to assess early learning goals
  • case studiesĀ to show assessment in practiceĀ 
  • EYFSĀ profileĀ contentĀ inĀ Module 7 of the online , plus more reception content to be added from spring 2026

Find local support

DfE isĀ fundingĀ local authoritiesĀ to provide EYFSĀ profileĀ assessment supportĀ forĀ schoolsĀ and pre-reception settings through theĀ Best Start Family Hubs grant.Ā 

These sessions will supportĀ practitionersĀ to share best practiceĀ and support each otherĀ to complete the EYFSĢż±č°ł“Ǔھ±±ō±šĢż²¹²õ²õ±š²õ²õ³¾±š²Ō³Ł.

The first session, delivered by local authorities in the summer term, will focus on professional dialogue. This will be followed by 2 further sessions in the autumn and spring term.
